Coming at you like candy confetti this colorful homage to classic arcade games of old pits you, a lone savior of humanity, against the invading alien forces. This event taking place in 2032. A date that is yet to hit the real world, and may or may not foreshadow future events for us ...
Whether or not it is foreshadowing such an event this twin stick bullet hell shooter has you facing off against alien mobs, and waves thereof. All across the globe, and as a single player experience. Using power-ups you face-off against the invaders netting a high score as your efforts are tallied. In two different modes of play you will effectively quell the invasion or die trying ... over and over again.
Gameplay in 'Alien Death Mob' comes in two distinctly different varieties. You have the story mode with a basic intro, and levels filled with waves that must be completed to a five star score based rating for advancing forward to the next area. There's that, and an arcade mode with four mini-games which pay tribute to retro games that you'll likely recognize. There's two parodies of Robotron, a Space Invaders clone, and a Berzerk clone. Each playing out fairly much the same as their inspiration, but some with more modern controls.
Audibly, and visually 'Alien Death Mob' is truly a spectacle to behold. Featuring a playful palette of pastels, and pixel art it manages to create a cornucopia of colors that are truly eye candy. Everything about the game reminds me of candy. From the player character exploding to what looks like a burst of Japanese rock candy to the varied alien species I can't help but get candy vibes from it all. This all comes with a retro style soundtrack fitting of the genre. Beyond the main game gimmick the nods to retro games play out as they should. An homage to a bygone era paying tribute to the classics that made for inspiration to many a developer.
The Verdict ...
This is one of those under the radar games that many will likely not know about. If you are a fan of retro or indie gaming, and like twin stick shooters you'll love 'Alien Death Mob'. It's a perfect edition to an Nintendo Switch owner's gaming library, and comes at an affordable cost. I highly recommend it!!! Both as an alien conspiracy theorist, and lover of classic arcade games!
