Maiden Cops (PS5) | REVIEW | A Vibrant Beat 'em Up With Monster Girls!!!

Maiden Cops, developed by Pippin Games and published by eastasiasoft, is a vibrant beat 'em up that throws players into the chaotic streets of Maiden City. The city is under siege by a criminal syndicate known as The Liberators, who aim to dominate through violence and fear. You take control of one of three distinct heroines including Priscilla, a spirited rookie with a knack for getting into trouble, Nina, the seasoned yet laid-back leader, or Meiga, a gentle but powerful fighter with a surprising edge.

Each character brings a unique personality to the fight, with a narrative that leans into lighthearted, risquΓ© humor and a touch of anime-inspired charm. The story follows their mission to dismantle the syndicate, uncovering a mix of quirky dialogue and a surprisingly layered plot that keeps the action moving across the city’s dangerous districts.

Gameplay in Maiden Cops is a love letter to classic arcade brawlers like Final Fight, delivering fast-paced, side-scrolling combat across seven lengthy levels. Players can choose their heroine and dive into the fray solo or with a friend in local co-op mode.

The game offers difficulty settings to cater to both newcomers and seasoned players alike, with a focus on chaining combos for high scores and unlocking rewards. You’ll battle waves of enemies, from standard thugs to buxom monster girls, using each character’s unique abilities such as Priscilla’s agility, Nina’s balanced attacks, or Meiga’s brute strength. Additional features include gimmick weapons like bats or pipes, motorcycles for high-speed chases, and a shop system where in-game currency unlocks costumes, cheats, and other extras, adding depth to the progression.

The Mechanics ...

The mechanics are tight and responsive, capturing the essence of retro beat 'em ups while adding modern tweaks. Each character has a distinct moveset, with light and heavy attacks, special moves that drain a stamina meter, and grabs for crowd control. Combos are easy to chain, rewarding skillful play with score multipliers, though the scoring system can feel punishing if you rely on continues, as it resets progress toward unlocks when your continue limit is spent.

The game’s pacing keeps fights intense, but some stages drag slightly due to enemy waves that overstay their welcome. Boss encounters are highlights, mixing challenging patterns with humorous dialogue, though occasional hitbox inconsistencies can frustrate. The controls are intuitive, with smooth inputs for dodging and specials, making it easy to jump in but rewarding to master.

The Presentation ...

Visually, Maiden Cops shines with its premium pixel art, bursting with color and personality. The character sprites are detailed, with fluid animations that give each heroine and enemy a distinct flair, from Priscilla’s bouncy energy to the exaggerated designs of the monster girl gangs.

Backgrounds, from neon-lit streets to gritty back alleys, are also richly crafted, evoking a nostalgic yet fresh aesthetic. The soundtrack is a standout, blending retro chiptune vibes with catchy, high-energy tracks that perfectly match the action. Sound effects pack a punch, with satisfying thuds and clangs, though some voice clips can feel repetitive. The presentation leans heavily into its cheeky, adult-themed charm, which may not suit all tastes but adds to its bold identity.

The Verdict ...

Maiden Cops delivers a solid beat 'em up experience that balances nostalgia with fresh ideas, making it a worthy addition to the genre. Its replay value comes from chasing high scores, unlocking costumes, and experimenting with different characters, though the lack of online co-op limits its long-term appeal. For its likely budget price point on the PS5, it offers substantial content with its lengthy campaign and robust unlockables.

While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of genre giants like Streets of Rage 4, its tight mechanics, vibrant presentation, and playful tone make it a fun, engaging experience for fans of arcade-style brawlers. If you’re looking for a cheeky yet polished beat 'em up, Maiden Cops is a satisfying punch to the face of crime.
