As an XBLIG/XBLA reviewer I often times take it upon myself to seek out the most unique (and sometimes odd) game titles out there for my readers. I think it's the obsucre, and newer game ideas that really make the gaming industry shine. Kobold's Quest a game that was developed by 'Sucker Free Games (SFG)' really fit that description. This game takes stealth, and the art of sneakery to a totally new level. Instead of seeking treasure, or trying to annihilate your enemies ninja style you play the role of a Kobold (a gremlin/gargoyle like creature) who must nab the villager's babies to satisfy the Kobold Commander's insatiable hunger.
Kobold's Quest's objective is pretty straightforward. Your objective is to serve your leader by bringing back a baby for meal time, or be served as the main course. To accomplish this not so easy task you will have to venture across fields, villages, and castles that are heavily guarded by humans/creatures (knights, villagers, wizards, birds, skeletons in S&M outfits ...). One hit from any of these characters and you will be shredded into gory bits. You are given a total of 5 lives per each level, but holding onto those lives might prove more difficult than you imagine. Throughout each level in Kobold's Quest you will find multiple paths. Some paths will lead you to certain doom while other paths offer the proper stealth required for retrieving, and returning the baby. There are also some areas that can only be accessed by hitting certain switches. The task at hand will definitely have you repeating levels if you get too hasty in your quest for baby.
Kobold's Quest can be played as either a single player game, or a multiplayer one with up to 4 players. I played through the singleplayer mode, and found it a tad bit dull. I honestly think that multiplayer will definitely be this game's strong point. Kobold's Quest has four different colored Kobolds (Orange, Yellow, Blue, Green) which can be picked to play as in both single player, and multiplayer modes. For the most part they all look the same (besides the color). In single player you must take the quest for baby upon yourself (with 5 lives), and try to survive each level long enough to bring the baby back to the commander which remains at the start of the level. In multiplayer things are spiced up a good bit, and each Kobold is in it for themselves. In fact it's a flat out race against the other players (Kobolds) to reach the commander with the baby first. In this mode you can steal the baby from the other players/Kobolds which makes the gameplay more intense, and competitive.
After doing my playthrough of singleplayer I decided that this game would be enjoyed much better with multiple players. The single player mode is challenging, and fun but it just seemed a bit lacking. I really enjoyed the tutorial voice from the signposts in the game. It added to the game's character. The animated drawings in the intro also made the game more interesting. If you have some friends who could join you in this game then I would definitely suggest getting it. The concept is unique, and has a fun twist.
