HOLY HELL!!! When I first saw this update on gamepress I was shocked, but shocked in a most pleasant way. I think Square Enix actually listened to my advice folks! I really do. I'm truly glad they did too, because what I had to say was a great idea. If you've been following my posts I recently typed up an article talking about worthy, and not so worthy DLC, and pay-per-play offers. In it I mentioned the fact that I've wanted to play "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn" since it's release on the PS3, but the mandatory credit card requirements kept me from doing so. I just don't have the faith in PSN's console security, and will NEVER submit billing info to them. That's the reason I was so straightforward with my blog posting, and is why I included "Square Enix" as a tag on the posting. I really wanted to get their attention, and it looks like it paid off.
As awesome as this news is though the gamepress update was a little vague about the subscription details. In it it stated that a 60 day pre-paid card would set a "Standard Subscription Player" back $29.99 (way less than a dollar a day), and that it was subject to subscription limitations. While this sounds all good the mention of "Subscription Limitations" has me a little worried. I'm wondering if we'll get the same in-game content as credit card using players get, or if our in-game content will be limited in some manner? The added bonus for new players, which is Awesome in it's own right is that we will be getting the first 30 days free with an included free trial. For those of you who have existing PS3 accounts though you are getting the blunt end of the deal, unfortunately. Sadly that's the way Square decided to go about things. Even so this has my hopes up once again, and has renewed my faith in Square Enix. I hope that you too give this game a chance, especially if you did not commit to a purchase of "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn" in it's earlier PS3 days. Remember the PS4 standard version, and collector's edition are available for pre-order, and will be out before too long.
Always remember that your opinion as a consumer matters. You have a voice in these sorts of business practices, and as ineffective as your lonely opinion may seem we can collectively make the gaming industry, and entertainment industry better as a whole. Take it from my personal experience. Big wigs, and corporate giants will listen to you if you provide creative criticism that offers them a way to reach their audience in a better, and more mutually beneficial way. I want to thank the guys & gals over at Square Enix for listening to what I have had to say, and possibly what others have said as well. I truly appreciate your efforts to make your offered gaming experiences better! Thanks!
Your Last Samurai,
Brad (OtakuDante)
