Almost My Floor | PS4 Review

Murder, Mania, Mystery, and Missing Persons. These are the things making up Sometime You's  psychological horror game. A point and click comic book inspired adventure starring Alex, and a whole host of other interesting characters that each have a role to play in the disappearance of Alex's girlfriend. That, and other strange happenings at the apartment the story is centered around.

Alex starts the adventure off heading to his apartment. A few choices in with his morally split conscience helping guide his decisions and he's in the middle of an otherworldly nightmare in which he can't discern reality from the seemingly real horror he's witnessing. Possibly brought on by psychosis or a love for horror films Alex's world is turned topsy-turvy as he tries desperately to make sense of his elevator ride through Hell. Not stopping at his floor initially he is taken on a floor by floor ascent and descent filled with puzzling problems, and hazards of a demonic sort. Utilizing his cellphone, and things he finds along the way Alex, through your guidance, tries to make sense of his predicament. Either coming to terms with his role in his girlfriend's disappearance or realizing he is a part of the Devil's ploy.

Like classic point and click adventures "Almost My Floor" sees you controlling various intersecting protagonists as you use interactive options, and sleuthing capabilities to figure out what's going on, and what needs to be done in order to advance. In this case you will take turns seeing things from Alex's side, and a private detective's side as they try to figure out what happened to Nika, Alex's missing girlfriend. The game starts off, initially, with Alex being interrogated by police about what transpired. Of course Alex goes on the defense offering truth as he sees it, and that supposed truth involves his demonic encounters after having hopped onto an elevator intended to take him to his apartment.

It is here that you get to reenact in real time chapter by chapter Alex's madness, or demonic possession through point and click means. Using a magnifying glass cursor to investigate, and interact with surroundings, and items as well as other apartment building tenants. This allows for speaking, taking a closer look, and picking up and using things you've collected. With the items, and residents often times comes puzzles and quick time events. It is a floor by floor ordeal with said elements becoming more intricate by design, and harder to deal with as you progress. On the flipside Adam Trust, the detective, does a follow-up sweep of the apartment building in much the same fashion though his objectives are narratively different. Both participants in the plot ultimately meeting in the end in such a fashion as to unravel the truth behind the terribly twisted tale.

Visually it has a pleasing, and more mature art style with slight animations. A gritty display with some lightly comedic features that keep the game from being too scary to deal with. Though it does have it's tense moments when facing the monsters in hiding. Overall the story through these characters, and situations does take on a more serious tone though. Hinting at mental health, and ones inability to realize reality from fantasy. A sort of look at what it's like to be insane, and accused of a crime you didn't think you committed. To that end it is a very competent, and superbly executed point and click experience that is unique among the genre.

The Verdict ...

I love this game. It hooks you from the prologue to each chapter going forward. The characters are very interesting, and the story itself filled with twists and turns. Making you believe one thing one minute, and another thing later on. It's mystery done right, and to be able to see the crazy goings on in Alex's reality in contrast to the detective's is a brilliant way to string players along for the ride. I will say though that for all the good there is one really bad thing I encountered four chapters in. A game breaking bug that did not allow me to finish the game. If you are reading this as the developer know that it was after I secured the green tome, and left the room to bring it to the monster girl with the pet doggos. For whatever reason the eyeball in teeth elements turned pink as if they were glitched out, and I could not hand over the tome. Nor could I bring up any menus. If you fix this the game gets my ultimate praise. I loved what I got to play, and wanted to continue. It is a very good game, sadly with some game breaking glitches.
