Maruchan | Cheddar Cheese Flavor Yakisoba - A Food Review

Most every kid knows of the wonders of instant ramen. That affordable MSG flavor packet inclusive kind that takes some water, and a microwave to prepare. The kind of sh*t college students survive on. You've got various flavors to choose from including, beef, chicken, creamy chicken, and even shrimp. There's a flavor for everyone, and everyone has a favorite go to flavor. Mine has always been the default chicken flavor, for those of you wondering. While instant ramen is fairly much the same across all brand names there's one that's stood out above the rest though. It is known as Maruchan. It is the brand most American ramen lovers enjoy. Myself included.

Where am I going with all of this? Well, recently I noticed my local grocery store started carrying other Maruchan noodle products. One of which caught my immediate attention. This unusual addition to the Maruchan family is known as Yakisoba. It is contained within a sealed tray as a noodle brick, and includes a variety of different flavor choices contained within a foil packet. The one I went for was the cheddar cheese flavor Yakisoba. I had an inkling of an idea about how it might taste, and I wasn't too far off. If you imagine a pile of lengthy noodles with macaroni flavor you wouldn't be too far off either. The powdered cheese flavoring that comes with it adds a somewhat spicy sharp cheddar taste that isn't your typical Velvetta or Mac & Cheese blend. It is a potent, but savory flavor that nicely compliments the thinly shredded noodles.

All you have to do to prepare the Yakisoba when cooking it for a meal is fill the tray up to the marked line with water, seal the tray back up, microwave for 4 minutes, take it out when done, and stir in the flavor packet. It's an easy to fix one person to two person meal that will set you back a little over $1 for a single portion with current grocery prices in mind. You can also buy it in bulk bundles like you can with other ramen noodle packs. If I were to give it a rating I'd say this particular instant noodle is actually better than base ramen. The noodle quality is superior to Maruchan's ramen, and the cheddar flavor is even better than any of their ramen flavors by a longshot. Do keep this in mind though. Frequently eating this meal, as with any instant ramen, can wear on you after a while. In moderation though it is a worthy grocery addition to a household living on a budget. It's filling, and easily made.
