Ginger - The Tooth Fairy | PS4 Review

Little is explained about this cute collect-a-thon other than the fact that Ginger the tooth fairy's brother and his evil boss Kavity have stolen away her power teeth as told by Louis her racing bat buddy. The power teeth being her only means to open magic doors and deliver unto the kiddos their money for lost teeth. Thus it is up to you to collect everything collectible especially the teeth so that you can open up doors to new areas Super Mario Bros 64 style!

As Ginger, a red haired bunny girl that doubles as the tooth fairy, it is your goal to reclaim all your lost power teeth, and avoid death by baddies as you encounter the evil boss Kavity's minions along the way. Your only defense against them being a bunny hop that allows you to bounce upon their head until they are no more. Another nod to the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

As you make your way through the Metroidvania interiors of each area you will collect a number of tooth related items. This includes half spent toothpaste tubes with googly eyes, canine and molar teeth, as well as what looks like plaque buildup. That and the letters D-E-N-T for a special bonus. Let me also not forget about Ginger's health which is dependent upon purple and green toothbrushes. Four of which make up her entire health bar in Yin Yang fashion.

Stages in the game are broken up by rooms that require a certain amount of collected power teeth to open and enter. Once inside you'll need to clear or avoid enemies while collecting everything you need to collect. Some of which is hidden away by secret walls, through activated levers/switches, or special enemies. Those goals and hazardous threats that make progress a little less easy in the 2D platforming sense.

The Presentation ...

For an indie that is budget priced, "Ginger - The Tooth Fairy" is a well crafted pixel art inclusive experience with a detailed design that mimics the 32 bit era of gaming. It is accented by a whimsical soundtrack of bit tunes and instrumentals and vocal reactions to Ginger's deaths and hopping actions. Making for a pleasantly crafted, cute, and complimentary package.

The Verdict ...

Heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros., but on a 2D scale this cute collect-a-thon that is, "Ginger - The Tooth Fairy" offers enough fun for fans of classic gaming experiences. Perfection of a playthrough is the key to nabbing every trophy, and fully completing the game. Making it a game that is likely more entertaining and tolerable in one full run than in repeat tries.

It may be a one and done kind of game, but for the price, and the gameplay it more than makes up for the cost. The PSN trophies being the main prize for commitment to a perfect playthrough. If you liked games like Super Mario 64 I think it's safe to say you will also enjoy "Ginger - The Tooth Fairy"!!!
