Guys. If you've ever been in the dating scene like I have you've more than likely encountered that clingy girlfriend who won't leave you alone, am I right? The kind of girlfriend who is so desperate to maintain the relationship she'll make you're life a living hell if you don't commit. That, my friends, is what SometimesYou's latest indie, "Girlfriend From Hell" is all about.
At it's heart it is a point-and-click puzzle solving game wherein Mia, the disgruntled girlfriend, aims to make her boyfriend Haruto's life miserable for not accepting her wedding proposal. Haruto, by contrast, is the kind of guy who prioritizes gaming, and would rather enjoy the girlfriend fantasy as apposed to the real deal. Sadly this game takes Mia's side of the sordid ordeal, for better or for worse ...
In 'Girlfriend From Hell' Mia is tasked with setting up trap scenarios with domino effects that will cause Haruto's blood pressure to rise. She basically has to make his life a living hell. Utilizing the items within Haruto's own home Mia, in episodic fashion, will need to stealthily collect the items and lay the traps without being caught. She cannot be seen or you'll have to repeat the stage from scratch.
As the episodes, or stages increase numerically so to do the number of tasks at hand. You will need to efficiently time, coordinate, and setup the traps without getting caught. This nets you a star rating, and in this game perfection is expected. There's no half-assing the effort. You either fully complete the stage and earn all the stars as well as the trophy or you fail.
While utilizing a UI interface that allows for the cycling and application of collected items you will not only need to observe Haruto's routine for that stage while avoiding detection, but must also set the traps in a timely fashion according to said routine. In Haruto's home there are multiple floors, rooms, cabinets, and closets you can hide in as your plan plays out. Haruto, which is the object of your unbridled wrath, will repeat his routine throughout these rooms until you are either caught, or you succeed in fulfilling the required amount of traps.
The Presentation ...
The solo developer, and their team of artists decided to apply a cartoon look to their characters and world. It is a palette of pastels and reds that reflect Mia's part in the mayhem. Before each stage a comic book style art panel is displayed reminding the player of the reason Mia and Haruto are in this situation. It's lighthearted design with hilarious animations regarding Haruto's continued abuse. Even the soundtrack fits the comedic and lighthearted art style on display.
The Verdict ...
Aside from some camera panning issues, 'Girlfriend From Hell' is a proper puzzle game with comedic value. There's laughs to be had, and both the male and female audience can get something out of this experience. It's highly relatable on the relationship front with a hint of "HOME ALONE" thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind though it is a budget priced smaller game. It's not as grand in scale as some indies, but it does offer challenging puzzles for those willing to take them on. It definitely gets a recommendation from me!!!
