Atomic Owl PS5 Review: Feathered Fury Meets Roguelite Excellence

Atomic Owl, developed by indie studio Monster Theater and published by Eastasiasoft Limited, is a pixel art side-scrolling roguelite action platformer available on PS5 (among other platforms). The game casts players as Hidalgo Bladewing, an owl prince and warrior in the avian world of Judanest. After a betrayal by the evil Crow Sorcerer Omega Wing, a rival who corrupts Hidalgo’s companions with dark Meza energy and leaves him imprisoned for two years, Hidalgo awakens with a chaotic, talking demonic blade as his ally. He must fight through hordes of Tengu, rescue his fallen friends, and seek revenge.

The story draws on classic revenge tropes with a lighthearted, humorous twist thanks to the brash, voice-acted sword companion and expressive dialogue. It’s straightforward but charming, blending serious stakes with funny bird-themed antics and a 90s-inspired vibe. Hidalgo serves as a capable, determined protagonist whose growth through runs mirrors his personal journey from captive to avenger.

The Gameplay ...

Gameplay combines fast-paced hack-and-slash combat with precise platforming in a roguelite or no roguelite structure. You battle across 8 side-scrolling zones, choosing from varied weapons like swords, hammers, whips, and more, each with distinct feels. You collect Meza to level up health and power during runs, absorb souls for upgrades, unlock elemental abilities (flame, lightning, poison), and occasionally transform into the powerful Void Crow for crowd control.

Objectives involve progressing through levels, defeating bosses (including corrupted allies), finding keys or navigating hazards, and tackling winged gliding sections for traversal variety. A full playthrough features repeated runs wherein you die, revive stronger at the Twilight Perch thanks to persistent progression, and push further until you overcome Omega Wing. It trusts players with a solid arsenal early while emphasizing skill, timing, and adaptation.

Alternatively the "No Rogue(lite) option does away with upgrades, and roguelite features making the 8 zone playthrough more akin to a classic Metroidvania platforming experience. Either way the objectives remain the same. You must free your troupe, and face off in a final fight against Omega Wing to undo the curse he has brought upon Judanest.

The Presentation ...

Presentation shines with vibrant, hand-drawn pixel art full of neon colors, expressive animations, and a Japanese-futuristic aesthetic that mixes traditional elements with synth-heavy flair. Levels feel dynamic and chaotic in the best way. The hybrid soundtrack, in blending synthwave, disco, electronic, and JRPG influences, suits the experience, delivering energetic beats that perfectly complement the action and make combat and exploration addictive. Voice acting adds personality, especially for the sword.

The Verdict ...

Atomic Owl delivers a satisfying, approachable roguelite experience with tight platforming, fun combat variety, and strong audiovisual appeal for its modest length. Content is solid for the price, with meaningful progression that keeps you coming back. Replay value is high thanks to the roguelite design, weapon experimentation, upgrades, and challenge of mastering runs that are perfect for short-to-medium sessions.

I recommend Atomic Owl to fans of retro-inspired action platformers (think 90s vibes with modern polish), roguelites that emphasize skill over extreme punishment, and anyone seeking a charming, colorful indie adventure with a memorable soundtrack. It’s especially suited for players who enjoy quick, replayable runs and bird/samurai-flavored absurdity on PS5.
