As a gamer of old age I've seen my fair share of ups and downs in the industry. Bad business trends that affect both gamers, and those selling games. In the recent several years, in particular, I've took note of the war waging between the OG gamer community, and the modern audience. Everyone and their mother has put their two cents worth in on the matter, including myself. Thinking about it I began to second guess the debate method being used to combat corporate capitulation. I came to the conclusion that money is the root cause of the sum of problems we are all facing, and that perhaps money, or the lack thereof, is the only true solution to said problems. By that I mean all it takes is a collective silent effort, a coordinated money pull, from these studios to get the point across. Hear me out ...
I think words are being wasted on what business, itself, says best. If we cut the lifeline of support for these woke and broke endeavors we could effectively force the industry to self-reflect to the point that they abandon ship, and turn things around. For in forcing them to do their own sales related homework instead of shouting it from every social media rooftop they will lose any blinders they've had on to the truth, because they'll be faced with the cold, hard facts. Statistics don't lie, and they can only fudge numbers so far with their investors, before those investors grow wise to the scheme. Case in point, the fallout between Bungie and Sony.
These studios with an ideological slant have become the con men and women of the modern age. They use their vocal advantage to sway investors to contribute to their cause with no intent on delivering the blockbuster hits they promise. At some point investors always dip out when these losses become too much, because their core focus is in making infinite financial gain. If they see that this is not feasible they will either change business tactics or bleed out earnings until there's nothing left. Again, the absence of buyers on a collective scale would obviously lead to this outcome.
Supposing the industry's intent all along was to push the message at all costs they'd still fail in achieving that when the industry itself collapses under the weight of substantial failure. It is truly lose-lose for the money moguls of the gaming industry if we do not feed them our hard earned cash.
This leads me to another point of interest involving gaming as we now know it. We've all realized that we own nothing we've paid for from modern console gaming companies. At some point we must stop buying anything until we actually own it, or continue to be our own worst enemy. We must demand that EULAs, and license agreements be completely removed, and that the full game exists on all forms of physical media. We must also fight for game preservation, and against console limitations that could void access to those gaming experiences in the future. Things like internal batteries that eventually render consoles useless, and other components made under planned obsolescence need to be addressed, and fixed. Only when these demands are achieved will gaming be worth buying into again.
At the current moment all we really have is malfunctioning hardware locked behind online access, games locked behind licenses, and unending greed that asks us for more, but gives us less. Being smart with your money is imperative these days, because of issues like this, and anything that is a luxury that you pay for should be owned outright. There's no excuse for treating gaming like a service with a price tag fitting of an owned product. They need to either lower the prices to a point that reflects a non-owning service like a rental, or sell a product that the consumer owns at a current market value. Until we vote collectively with our wallets and purses though, and in silence they will not understand how serious we are. My suggestion is that we don't waste time rehashing said arguments. Simply pull that money safety net right out from under them, and watch them scramble to make things right. If you agree with what I've said be sure to share this article. Also let me know anything else you feel should be done to stop this highway robbery.
