Decimation X (XBLIG): "A True Shmup Tribute"

Today I found another awesome developer who actually cares about his audience. Matthew Doucette of Xona Games was kind enough to give me a code of his hit Xbox Live Indie Game 'Decimation X' in exchange for my promise to play his new game 'Decimation X3'. At this point I'm extremely glad to have made the transition over to the Xbox 360. It has opened up awesome opportunities for me, and has allowed me to meet some very cool developers. I consider myself both lucky, and privileged to be a part of the Xbox 360 gaming community. I hope that my reviews have helped all of my readers to find those hidden XBLIG gems out there that you might have passed up otherwise. I also hope to continue to provide quality reviews for all the XBLIG/XBLA fans out there.

Decimation X is a 2D fixed shooter that pays homage to games like the classic Space Invaders. It keeps true the the retro look of the classic shmups with minor visual updates. The gameplay is smooth, and runs at 60 frames per second. Unlike the classic shmups Decimation X does feature more power-ups, a variety of firepower, and a recoverable defense (wall) system. It also features some retro/techno style music from Imphenzia which keeps pace with the onscreen action. Decimation X was featured in Japan's top gaming magazine Fatmitsu as the #1 Xbox Live Indie Game in Japan. Aside from being a single player game Decimation X also offers a 4 player mode. I've actually noticed that other Xona Games feature the 4 player modes as well. It's a nice option when you have friends who can join in on the fun.

I've actually played Decimation X for about an hour now, and I'm hooked. I'm one of those gamers who love to try and beat the top scores in a game. I guess you could say I'm a competitive gamer when it comes to getting 1st place in online leaderboards/scoreboards. Matthew Doucette the producer of Xona Games actually shared his top score with me (4.1 Million pts.), and it looks like I've got my work cut out for me. I don't give up so easily though. I absolutely love the retro look of the game, and the simple controls. The massive amounts of power-ups make the game even more enjoyable. I can definitely see why this shmup got the #1 spot in Japan. If you haven't played any of Xona Game's shmups, and you are a shoot 'em up fan you are totally missing out. The games are all very affordable, and usually run for 80 msp ($1). Like any quality shmup , Decimation X offers great replay value. I can honestly see myself shooting for that high score for a long time to come, and I'm really looking forward to Decimation X3 now.
