Lootfest (XBLIG): "A Pixelated RPG Adventure"

During my quest to acquire game codes for review I came across a cool little RPG called 'Lootfest'. After I had watched the trailer on youtube I sent vikingfabian (gamefarm), the developer of Lootfest a review code inquiry (message) in hopes of securing a full game code. I actually prefer doing reviews on the finished product, because it allows me to give accurate details about the game. When I recieved a reply back from vikingfabian telling me he had a code for me I was anxious to start the game, and see what it was all about.

Lootfest opened up with a simple menu, and a rather neat looking 3D background filled with falling loot (coins). When I got into the actual game I was impressed. The graphics were simple, crisp, and vivd in color. All of the 3D rendering was delivered in a quality fashion. Everything in the game from the villagers to the monsters were created from colored blocks. I even found that Lootfest contains some pixelated blood effects, but don't worry they aren't really mature in nature. Lootfest features a 1-4 player option in case you have some friends who can join you, but I only played the single player since I had no one to join in. While playing the game I found the controls to be simple, and very easy to learn. In fact I'd say this game features the most user friendly controls I have seen in an RPG. The quest, or goal of Lootfest is pretty much straightforward. You, the hero must find and defeat the evil bosses. In order to do this you have to gather loot (coins) from fallen enemies, and purchase the necessary equipment needed. You will acquire bow upgrades after defeating bosses, and must defeat each boss in a certain order. There are hawks that can guide you to the correct boss if you get lost, but they can only be purchased from other villagers. You will also find weapon upgrades, shield upgrades, pies (for health), arrows, and pigeons (for finding shops/villagers).

The controls in Lootfest involve the X, Y, A, and Start buttons. Combat in the game basically has you using the 'A' button to swing your sword, and the 'X' button for firing arrows. The shields in the game are used by facing an enemies shots, and not pressing any button. The start button will bring up an option menu that includes a map, inventory, and character customization options. The map will allow you to see where you are as well as the current/next boss area. You'll find that the inventory menu is also used for accessing/using your hawks, and pigeons. Character customization options include color changes for your tunic, hair color, and skin color. This will probably prove most useful when you are playing with multiple players.

I found this RPG adventure to be very inviting. I was very impressed with the graphics, and the simple controls were a nice touch. For the most part I found the game to be flawless, but I did discover that there was no save feature available. Unless you intend to spend a couple of hours or more completing the game then this can be an issue. I'm hoping the developer will be able to add a save feature to the game with an update. If he can do that then this would be one of my top XBLIG picks for this year.
