BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle Expansion | Bonus DLC For The Right Price

Not too long ago Arc System Works released a big patch to the core BBTAG base game. It was called patch 2.0, and with it came a laundry list of feature, system, and character changes (2.0 Update). This patch was freely given to any owner of the game, and allowed the base players to play against 2.0 characters without having to purchase the additional DLC expansion. The expansion, which this review will be about, comes with 9 additional characters, a newly introduced scenario, new character interactions, and colors. You even get access to special lobby avatars not available in the base game. It's a $24.99 dollar upgrade that holds it's own in value. Normally character DLC would cost you around $7.99 a pop, but with this DLC you get what equates to three new sets of characters plus the bonus content. It's definitely a discount deal in that regard. That having been said if you have yet to get into BBTAG, and are interested in the current full experience there is a full price special edition that will set you back $49.99. The difference is that it includes character DLC 1-7 plus the new expansion. The physical edition, in particular, comes with a code for the new expansion. Needless to say you have choices when it comes to BBTAG 2.0 and it's content.

Character-wise the new 2.0 paid for DLC expansion is not one to scoff at. In fact it holds some of the more desired characters of the crossover. In it you'll find Neo Politan from RWBY, Hilde from In-Birth, Elizabeth from P4A, Akatsuki from Akatsuki Blitzkampf, Yumi from Senran Kagura, Celica A. Mercury from BlazBlue, Adachi from P4A, Susanoo from BlazBlue, and the odd Bitztank from Akatsuki Blitzkampf. Each character hailing from their own fighting game universe. Among the lot Yumi stands out as the most unique as she comes from the 3D hack 'n slash brawler Senran Kagura. She is newly animated just for this game, and is more impressive than most of the ported sprites of older characters. Neo Politan who also hails from an unusual origin, the RWBY series, is also freshly designed for BBTAG 2.0. Everything from her play style to her visual design is new to the Arc System Works fighting game franchise. As far as the ridiculous Blitztank goes this awkwardly sized skull bearing monstrosity is also surprisingly complex in the fighting game sense. It can even throw you FFS! Overall the selection of newcomers gives the adopting player plenty to try out both in offline, and online competition. With the added color palette you can color coordinate your teams as well making it a more personalized fight.

All of the character goodness coupled with bonus content makes this DLC bundle worth the asking price. Were you to have paid for three character sets individually it would have cost you $24 easily. With the added singleplayer story scenario, the additional colors, and the lobby extras it rounds up to a decent deal for the price asked. I'd say if you are missing the 1-7 characters though, and have yet to buy into the base game I'd definitely go for the $50 full package version instead. That way you'd get access to all current characters plus all the bonus content. Supposing you already have 1-7 DLC, and are looking to upgrade with the new characters the expansion is not a bad deal. You get your money's worth in the end. One thing I forgot to mention ... There's a new Jukebox in the main lobby area where you can pick songs from each of the series involved!!!
