Satryn DX | Nintendo Switch Review

Flynn's Arcade nod to the Spectrum ZX era of indies that is, "Satryn DX" comes at us in a varied color palette with infinite replay value. This score focused arena shooter with twin-stick controls, 12 enemy types, boss battles, and the goal to save friends for score multipliers and upgrades asks little of the paying player. For $6.99 on July 18th you'll have your chance to nab this inspired classic arcade experience for the Nintendo Switch!!!

As the main playable character you are tasked with saving all of your friends who have been taken to Satryn. Your friends, in turn, act as your credits and only way to reform or respawn back into the boxed in playing fields of Satryn DX. In each instance of play there are a set amount of friends to save, and a certain amount of enemies to clear. You can shoot the enemies to clear them out, and run into the friends to collect them.

As you collect friends you'll earn score multipliers, and at the 60 friend mark you will obtain one extra life or continue. The penalty for getting hit is the loss of friends, and the -35% deduction of score multipliers. That and their innate shielding capacity that fends off a lost life. When it comes to said score every 75,000 points you earn will unlock a new power-up that effects attacks.

The Presentation ...

Visually and audibly Satryn DX harkens back to that classic indie era of games like Robotron. It sports a simple pixel design with pixel effects that litter the screen as you blast away at enemies. Your character as well as your friends, and the limited assortment of enemies also have animations to compliment their onscreen movement. On top of all that the game has an oldschool arcade-like soundtrack with all the laser sounds, explosions, and pings to match the action. Not much in the way of music, but the sound effects are definitely a throwback to arcade classics.

The Verdict ...

Satryn DX in it's simplicity offers the gamer more bang for their buck. It's a game that literally has infinite replay value, and a leaderboard to backup any player effort put into reaching that highest score. Not only is the replay value high, but so too is the challenge. For a twin-stick shooter it'll definitely test your mettle. Should you be willing to take on that challenge though you have the opportunity to prove your worth among battle hardened arcade veterans. As a reviewer I highly recommend buying this one, and adding it to your Switch library! It's worth every penny!!!
